All of the men in the room have turned away, giving Tessa and Chopper as much privacy as they can have inside this room, but just like that night on the riverbank when she first gave herself to him, I can’t look away. Not so much because of the shock this time, though her letting him bury his face in her neck, her fingers digging into him like they want to stay there, is an embrace I didn’t expect to have to watch tonight. I’m keeping my eyes on her this time because I don’t trust him. Even the most loyal dog will bite when it’s injured, and that savage is far beyond having a sprained paw.

Chopper’s head raises, his one arm cradling Tessa against him and his other coming up to tangle in her hair. “You are worth this.” His mouth closes over hers, his hand in her hair holding her in place. She makes no move to fight him, their tongues colliding and my jaw aching from how hard I’m clenching it. Gary glances at me, the scene of what’s happening playing out for everyone’s ears to hear. Gary clears his throat and turns around, putting a hand on Chopper’s shoulder. “That’s enough. It’s time for you to go.”

“No,” Tessa cries, holding onto Chopper. “I don’t want you to go.”

He tugs his other hand up into her hair, fists on both sides of her head and a growl rumbling from his throat, his shoulders shaking from whatever he’s holding back. I walk toward them. Gary puts up a hand and nods to Randy. “We’ve got him. Just wait.”

“Three seconds.” I let him know exactly how long I’ll wait before I extract her from Chopper’s bloodstained hands myself.

Chopper’s mouth moves to Tessa’s again, a gentle stroke of his lips and a tear sliding from his eye. “What I let loose, I can’t put back inside me.” He drags his fists forward, face burying first in her hair and then in her neck. “I love you.”

He drops his hold on her and stomps past me. “Chopper!” she screams after him. I catch her around the waist and hold her in place while the other men file out behind the beast. “No!” Tessa screams, her fists pounding over my shoulders. “No! No, no, no! Chopper!”
